Setting Priorities
Living in the Pacific Northwest, we enjoy the beauty of mountains, ocean and inlets, parks and National Forests. It seems a luxury to look out, year-round, at evergreen forests, snow capped mountains, and endless waterways (Of course, this comes with a lot of rain and overcast days. You can't have it all). But, to keep the parks and forests open to be enjoyed requires money, mostly tax money. Those governmental and business types across the country in the "other Washington" don't seem to consider these natural resources as priorities.
Forest Service roads and trails are not being cleared after storms. The National Parks are not being adequately staffed or maintained. We owe a huge vote of thanks to the many volunteers who have "jumped into the breech" to help in these areas. The last presidential administration in that "other Washington" saw fit to give massive huge tax cuts( Approximately $1.5 trillion), mostly to those in the top income brackets. The tax cuts were paid for with, Guess what?- Borrowing money and increasing the National Debt. Strange priorities.
On another level, schools in Washington are cutting sports, music, art, drama, and other programs, while consolidating school districts and trimming teachers and staff. There are the usual outcries among taxpayers that teachers are paid too much; that there are too many administrators; that frivolous subjects are being taught; and that money is being wasted. Then, there are the residents of upscale senior communities that see no reason they should be taxed for schools when they don't have children in school. I doubt these folks know many teachers personally.
As I travel around this state, I see numerous gambling casinos, with hundreds of cars outside on all days and times. Some of these establishments have entertainment, eateries, and even hotels. It's nice that Indian tribes are receiving support from some of these casinos. If so many people seem to want to spend their money in this way, perhaps we should have some new casinos to fund the schools ;-).
Strange priorities.

I agree my husband is from the Pacific Northwest and I believe that funding should be shared. We have the same issue here on the West Coast they have cut education but yet the Casinos are making mega bucks it simply does not make any sense. :(
When you put it that way...we all know that putting money in a slot machine is generally a one way operation. It goes in, it rarely comes back out, and even if it does, it rarely meets or exceeds what went in.
I do think there are some individuals with money in their pockets, though, who do take a more proactive role in a varierty of causes. It's always a bit suspect, however, as to the real motivations behind those.
I absolutely agree that people should take up more interest in causes that support community, environment, preservation of parks and landmarks, and many other causes. Interestingly enough, many of the people who say they can't afford to donate anything are also the same ones who can be found in those very casinos week in and week out.
This was written two years ago, but nothing has changed ever since. And it's the same situation in every state. I'm a public school music teacher and I'm in constant fear of losing my job.
Gambling goes against Native American traditions and religions, but they've benefitted from having exclusive rights to use their sovereign land as a means to make income. Here in South Florida, the Miccosukee and Seminoles had their chance of making a fortune opening casinos. As a result, most of them stopped working for a living, they've become extremely obese, and more dependent on alcohol and drugs. My ex-fiance was a Miccosukee indian and I lived in the reservation for a few months before ending the relationship. As much as I love and respect NA culture, I couldn't see myself being surrounded by such negativity. He wasn't like that, but a few months after I moved out he passed by to let me know his 15 year old son had died of an overdose.
But that gig is over. Miami has been opening casinos that belong to the state. I wonder where that money is going to go. I sure haven't gotten a raise in the last 4 years.
Awesome hub! Thank you!
